An online webinar was conducted on “The amphibians and reptiles of Southern Western Ghats” via Google meet platform for students on 14th June 2021. The talk was delivered by Dr. S R Ganesh, Dy. Directore and Scientist, Chennai Snake Park where in a detailed lecture was given on taxonomy and diversity of amphibians and reptiles with emphasis on Western Ghats endemic species.

In association with the Kerala Forest Department an online webinar was conducted as part of International Tiger Day on July 29th 2021. The lecture was delivered by Sri. John Mathew, Divisional Forest Officer Working Plan, Achenkovil on “Tiger Conservation”.

In association with the National Bird watching day celebration a bird survey competition was held for UG students of BSc. Zoology and prizes were distributed for the winners.

An Invited talk on Bats- the glorified mammals was delivered by Mr. Sreehari Raman (Assistant Professor in Wildlife Sciences, College of Forestry, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur) on 26-11-2021 in the St. Josephs Hall, St Thomas College Palai. All the three batches of BSc. Zoology attended the lecture.

A career guidance session was conducted for final year students of BSc Zoology in association with the career and placement cell of St Thomas College Palai. The class was arranged in AIII-10 on 19.07.2022. Ms. Joan Joseph handled the session with interactive and doubt clearance session at the end.

A lecture series on climate change & nature conservation was conducted by the Department of Zoology in association with M. S. Swaminathan Research foundation in St. Joseph hall on 27.07.2022. The sessions were headed by Dr. T.V. Sajeev, Senior Principal Scientist, Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI). UG students from Department of Zoology and NSS volunteers of the college attended and interacted with the speaker on the topic.

The International Tiger Day was celebrated by the Department of Zoology on 29.07.2022 in the college. The celebration was inaugurated by the Principal. The B.Sc. Zoology students prepared and presented posters for awareness on importance of Tigers in nature and their conservation. Dr. Mathew Thomas, Head of the Department; Dr. Jayesh Antony, Assistant Professor, Dr. Pratheesh Mathew, Assistant Professor organized and co-ordinated the program.

A session for cleaning and arrangement of Zoology museum was done by BSc Zoology students on August 8th.

International Elephant day was celebrated in the college by BSc Zoology students by an exhibition of posters and elephant model for awareness on importance of Elephant conservation for college students on August 12.

A one day visit and study tour was conducted for final year BSc Zoology students to Trivandrum Zoo and Natural History Museum on 1st September 2022.

Department level Onam celebration was conducted for BSc Zoology students on September 2nd 2022. Students actively participated by preapring Pookkalam, Sadhya and cultural programs.

The world Honey Bee day was celebrated in the Department by conducting a Honey fest. Quality honey was collected from local Apiculturists and distributed based on orders received from August 26, 2022.

As part of the hands own training through group activity, two new aquariums were set up in the Zoology department by final year BSc Zoology students on 25th October 2022.

World Science day was commemorated by BSc Zoology students with a poster presentation based on the theme for 2022 – “Basic Science for sustainable development” on 10th November 2022.

As part of the hands own training through group activity initiated by the Zoology department, the newly introduced aquariums were cleaned by Second year BSc Zoology students on 16th December 2022.

A training and skill development session for the final year students of BSc Zoology were conducted on the topic – applying and attending interview on 19th January 2023. The session was handled by Ms. Joan Joseph, CHRD, St. Thomas College Palai.

An invited lecture was conducted for final year BSc. Zoology students on 16th January 2023 on the topic – Basic concepts and theories of Developmental Biology. The lecture was delivered by Dr.Benny PJ, former Head and Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, St.Thomas College Palai.

An invited talk on “Mellipona culture – Rearing and Management” was organized by the Department of Zoology on 23rd January 2023. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Sajan Jose K. Associate Professor (Rtd), St. Joseph’s College, Moolamattom that was attended by all the batches of BSc Zoology and local Apiculture farmers.

The students of final year BSc Zoology had a session on the placement activities of the CHRD department of St. Thomas College Palai and how to apply for jobs. The session was delivered by Ms. Alina Ann Mathew, Placement Coordinator, CHRD, St. Thomas College Palai.

STUDY TOUR [2016]

A study tour was conducted for III DC Zoology students to Ooty and Wayanad for 3 days. Dr. Benny P J and Mathew Thomas accompanied the students. A trekking and field visit to Muthanga and Tholpetty Wild life Sanctuaries were part of the study tour. A visit to Ooty Botanical Garden and Thrissur Zoological garden were added advantage to the trip.

FIELD VISIT [2016]

A field visit was conducted for II DC Zoology students to Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Thattekkad. Dr. R. Sugathan has taken a lecture on the biodiversity and birds present in Kerala, especially in the sanctuary region, migration and conservation of birds. They have also visited Edamalayar Dam area and Power House, as part of the trip.

STUDY TOUR [2017]

A study tour was conducted for III DC Zoology students to Kodaikanal, Munnar and Kochi for 3 days. Dr. Benny P J and Dr. Jayesh Antony accompanied the students. A field visit to Eravikulam National Park was part of the study tour. A visit to Mattupetty Dam and Indo-Swiss Dairy Farm, Munnar were added advantage to the trip.

Intercollegiate Fest [Fledge] 23-02-2017

An intercollegiate fest “Fledge” was organized by the Department of Zoology, St. Thomas College Pala on 23rd February 2017. The formal inauguration of the Zoology Fest was done by Dr. Benny P.J. (Head, Department of Zoology, St. Thomas College Pala) in the Library hall. The programme started at 10am with a prayer song. Students from 10 different colleges actively participated in the programme. Quiz competition and Spot identification contest were conducted as part of the programme. 20 different teams [two members each] from different colleges were competed in the quiz programme and 18 members were participated in the spot identification contest. The quiz programme was leaded by Prof. Mathew Thomas and spot identification was lead by Dr. Benny P.J. The competitions were over by 12.30 pm and the winners were awarded with prizes by Prof. Baby Augustine [Retired HOD, Department of Zoology] afterwards. First prize for quiz competition was Rs. 7000/- with a trophy and certificate of merit, followed by Rs.3000/- and Rs.1000/- respectively for the second and third prizes. Spot identification winner received Rs.1000/- along with a certificate of merit.

Student-Retired teacher’s interaction [2017]

As part of foundation day celebrations, an interactive session was arranged for our graduate students with the eminent retired faculties of the department. The meeting was very encouraging for the students as they could clear their doubts related to the curriculum. The experiences shared by the faculties were an added advantage to the meeting.

Intercollegiate Fest [METAMORPHOSIS 2K19] – 2019

An intercollegiate fest “METAMORPHOSIS 2K19” was organized by the Department of Zoology, St. Thomas College Pala on 12rd February 2019.The formal inauguration of the Zoology Fest was done by Prof. Baby Augustine(Retired Head, Department of Zoology, St. Thomas College Pala)in the College auditorium. Quiz competition, pet show, zoological exhibition and several game competitions like pubg, treasure hunt, and race 3’s football were conducted as part of the programme.

World environment day celebration – Poster competition - 2019

In connection with world environment day, Dept. of Zoology organized a poster designing competition on 18/06/2019, for both P.G and U.G students.

World Tiger Day Celebration - Poster Competition – 2019

World Tiger Day 2019 was celebrated on 29 July 2019. The students in the zoology department has been divided in to 4 groups and allowed them to prepare posters on the theme “Conservation of tigers”. The posters were displayed in the college on 30th July 2019. The posters were evaluated by our vice principal Dr.Sunny Kuriakose and first prize was given to team no.2 led by Chris Simon.

Freshers Day 2019

Department of Zoology St.Thomas college of pala has conducted a freshers day on august 1 2019 at the college Tisserent hall. The freshers day was organized by 3rd DC students along with the department of Zoology. All degree students of Zoology programme participated along with the the staff members of the department. Principal Rev James John Mangalath was invited as the special guest.

Invited talk on Microbes of Humans was delivered by Dr. Radhakrishnan E.K (Assistant Professor in Microbiology , School of Biosciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam).

Gandhi – Film show 2020

The department of Zoology conducted a film show in the St Joseph’s hall in regard of 71st death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The international award winning movie – Gandhi was played for the BSc. Zoology students.

Online webinar on Tissue Engineering: Recent Trends and application – 2020

An international online webinar was conducted by the department of Zoology on 10th July 2020 via Google meet. The convener of the webinar was Dr. Jayesh Antony, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, St Thomas College Palai. The resource person was Dr. Robin Augustine PhD, Post Doctoral Researcher, Biomedical research center and Mechanical Engineering Department, Qatar University. The webinar started at 11.30 am IST and concluded by 1.00pm and was attended by 107 participants from different colleges.
