About Us

The Combined Department of History and Economics was started in the college in 1950 and Prof. A. O. Joseph was the first history teacher of the College. Pre-degree batches had history papers and history was the subsidiary paper of economics and politics. Rev, Fr. T.M. Joseph Thekkandiyil, Prof. K. V. John have served the Department as resourceful Professors.

When Pre-Degree was delinked from the college, a new Model II U. G. Course in History was started in the college on 13 December 1999 with Archaeology and Museology as Vocational subjects. It is the only Model II Vocational Course in the College. Prof. P. V. Joseph and Dr. Pius Malekandathil were the pioneers of the Vocational History Course. Dr. James John joined the Department of History as lecturer in 2002. Sri Johny Joseph, appointed in 1996 as Junior Lecturer in the Pre-Degree Category left for Edakkoly Govt. Higher Secondary School in 2004. During the two decades of its history, the Department has crowned many batches of students and secured many ranks. As part of the Vocational training the Degree students of the Department of History undergo internship in Archaeology and Museology at the Centre for Heritage Studies, Hill Palace, Tripunithura.

Dr. Cyriac Jose was appointed as Assistant Professor in Archaeology in 2012 and Sri Manesh Varghese John was appointed as Assistant Professor in History in 2013. Many Guest Lecturers have served the Department during all these years. Dr. James John was the first Head of the independent Department of History and continued till 31 March 2018 when he became the Principal of the college. Sri Manesh Varghese John has been serving as the Head in charge of the Department of History since 1 April 2018.

On 15 February 2014, University granted affiliation to M. A. in History. The role played by Dr. James John in starting P. G. Course in History is worth mentioning. The M. A. Course in History was inaugurated on 10 October 2014 by Sri. K. M. Mani, the former Finance Minister of Kerala in the presence of H. E. Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, the Patron of the college. Within a short span of five years three batches of students have successfully completed their Master Degree in the Department. Many students beginning from the first batch have secured high ranks and covetable results which reached its zenith in 2018 with Second Rank and 100% success either with A or B grades.

The Faculty members of the Department has over 25 publications and many paper presentations in International and National Seminars. The Department has organized three international Seminars and a National Seminar. The department maintains a Departmental Library. Department also conducts NET coaching in History under the initiatives of Sri. Manesh Varghese John. The Department maintains a Museum under the leadership of Dr. Cyriac Jose. Dr. James John is a research Guide of M. G. University, Kottayam. Besides, the Department has also visiting faculty members like Prof. K. S. Mathew (Former Professor of History, Pondicherry Central University), Dr. Pius Malekandathil (Professor, JNU), Dr. Joseph C. C. (Pro-Vice Chancellor, Christ University Bangalore).

Department of Archaeology

Archaeology has been taught as a vocational subject since the inception of B.A Vocational History (Model II) Programme in the College in the year 1999. Department of Archaeology was formally established with the appointment of Cyriac Jose in the department as an Assistant Professor in the year 2012. Department is providing opportunity to the students to learn the basics of archaeology through formal learning and it is enhanced with regular archaeological field works and internships.
