Yearly programmes were chalked out in the first week of June 2010. It was generally felt that there was a considerable difference in the curriculum and pattern of teaching in between the UG and PG programmes. In order to equip the first year PG students with the modern trends in Economics, a two-day induction programme was organized on 14 and 15 September 2010. The chief resource persons were Prof. P.S. Mathew, former HOD of Economics and Prof. Rosalind George, HOD of Economics, St. Dominic’s College, Kanjirappally. The formal inauguration of the Economics Association was held on 4 October 2010. Dr. E.M. Thomas, Associate Professor of Economics, Christ College, Irinjalakuda was the chief resource person. The topic for discussion was “Decentralised Planning in India: Prospects and Challenges Ahead”. A two-day youth leadership programme for II MA students was organized in association with Nehru Yuva Kendra, Alappuzha in the Pastoral Institute, Arunapuram on 9 and 10 February 2011.

Public Discussion on Union Budget 2011-12
A public discussion on Union Budget 2011-12 was organized by the Department of Economics in association with Mathrubhumi Daily on 3 March 2011. Sri. K.P. Padmakumar, Former Chairman, Federal Bank Ltd. and executive director of Muthoot Group was the chief resource person. He congratulated the Union Minister for Finance on the effective steps taken in the Union Budget for the integrated development of the country. Measures like increased allocation of funds for the rural sector and agriculture and steps for reducing the fiscal deficit of the country are in the right direction. He also noted that direct taxes now bring more revenue to the central exchequer. But the rapid increase in market prices, rising crude oil prices in the global market etc. are real threats to national economy. Dr. Alex Thannippara, Member, Syndicate of MG University, presided over the meeting. Sri. Nandakumar Sharma, Dy. Manager, Mathrubhumi Daily, made the introductory remarks. Dr. K.K. John, HOD of Economics, welcomed the gathering and Prof. Allan Zacharia proposed the vote of thanks. A budget analysis competition was conducted for college students in the afternoon. Ms. Aswathy M.V., Ms. Liz Emmanuel and Mr. Manuel Mathew secured the first, second and third prizes. Sri. K.S. Joseph, Dy. Editor, Mathrubhumi Daily, was the chief guest at the valedictory session and he distributed prizes to the winners. Sri. D. Prasad, Commercial Tax Officer, Pala, who secured the state award for meritorious service for the year 2009-2010, was honoured in the meeting.
