Second Economics News reading analysis competition was organized by the department on 30/08/2023.

September 2022

A talk on “Overseas Education: Prospects and Challenges” was organized on September 1, 2022. Mr. Sinon George (CEO & Career Consultant, Excellent Study) was the resource person. III BA and II BA students of Economics were the audience.

Reunion of 2017-19 MA batch was arranged on September 3rd, 2022.

Association Inauguration

The inauguration of economics association was organized with an invited talk on social cost of migration: Evidences from Kerala. It held on 16th September 2022 at St. Joseph’s Hall. Dr. Irudaya Rajan (former Professor, CDS Trivandrum and Chairman, IIMD) was the chief guest and delivered the inaugural address. Principal Rev. Dr. James John presided over the meeting and delivered the presidential address. The meeting was formally welcomed by HOD, Dr. Biju K.C. and concluded the formal vote of thanks by Dr. Joben K Antony, Faculty, dept. of Economics.

MOU

Department of Economics signed Memorantum of Understanding (MOU) with International Institute of Migration and development (IIMD), India on September 16, 2022.

An Online Coaching for paper-1 (UGC-NET) was organised by the department on 16th and 17th of September, 2022.

October 2022

Department of Economics organized a Power point presentation for Students on the topic, “A Retrospect of Nobel laureates In Economics” . it was held on 17th October, 2022.

FLAMBEAU 2k22

Talent Hunt” was conducted on 19th October 2022. All the students of the department performed and showcased various cultural programmes. It was held in College Auditorium.

November 2022

An invited talk on “Corruption Free India for a Developed Nation” was organized as part of Observance of Vigilance Awareness Week 2022 (Oct- 31 – Nov.6). Sri. A. K. Karthik (Lead District Officer, Regional office, RBI, Trivandrum) and Sri. James Mathew (Financial Literacy Councillor, Lalam Block) were the resource persons. it was held on 3rd November 2022.

The Third Economics News Analysis Competition for Students was conducted on 15th November 2022.

December 2022

Industrial Visit

An Industrial visit to KAITHARI INDUSTRY BALARAMAPURAM, THIRUVANTHAPURAM, KERALA, was organized by the First Year MA Economics students, St. Thomas College, Pala, on Monday 19th December 2022. They visited the Handloom (Kaithari) Industry, Balaramapuram, on the purpose, to understand the traditional methods of weaving (hand- loom weaving) and the contribution of small-scale industry to economy.

Christmas Celebration

The department arranged Christmas celebration on 23rd December, 2022. Prof. Alan Zacharia extended wishes and delivered the Christmas message. The programme included cake cutting, carol song by students etc.

January 2023

Workshop

A two-day workshop on Research Methodology in Social science was organized on 9th and 10th, January, 2023, in association with Department of Student Services, M.G. University and Dr. P.J. Thomas Centre for Social science Research, St. Thomas College, Palai. Mr. Abraham K. Samuel, Director, DSS, MG University was the Chief guest. The Chief resource person was Dr. Vijayamohan Pillai, Honorary Professor, Gulati Institute of Finance and taxation (GIFT), Trivandrum.

Eco-fiesta 2k23

Ecofiesta-an intercollegiate economic fest was organized by the economic association on 21 & 23 of January, 2023.

February 2023

NET Coaching

A UGC-NET coaching for paper -1 was organized on 2nd February, 2023 for MA Students. Ms. Athira Raveendran, Guest Lecturer, Department of Economics, Alphonsa College, Palai was the resource person.

Budget Analysis

Union Budget Analysis Competition for Students was conducted on 23rd February, 2023. 14 students participated in the event. The winners were given cash awards and certifictaes.

Merit day Celebration

Merit day was celebrated on 23rd february, 2023. Sri. Mani C. Kappan, MLA was the chief guest. Sri. Ajith John (2015-18 Batch) was felicitated for securing 13th rank in the Kerala Administrative service (KAS). The rank holders, NET winners, Sports athletes, NCC army cadets, winners in the University Youth festival were also felicitated.

ECO-FIESTA – INTER-COLLEGIATE ECONOMIC FEST

Eco – Fiesta: An Inter- Collegiate Economic Fest was organised on 28th February 2017. 4 -Musics, a music band which is a group of four youngsters, formally inaugurated the fest. The fest includes of quiz, the best economist, debate and paper presentation competitions.

Eco-fiesta -An Inter Collegiate Economic Fest - was conducted on 15th February 2019. Rev. Dr. James John Mangalathu inaugurated the fest.

UNION BUDGET ANALYSIS

Union Budget Analysis and budget analysis competition for students were conducted on 3rd February 2017. Sri. Tom Thomas Thekkel (AGM, Federal bank, Pala) was the guest of honour.

State Budget Analysis was organized on 6th March 2017. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Roberse Thomas and Prof. Trace Benny

Dr. P. J. Thomas Centre for Social Sciences Research - Programmes

“Dr. P. J. Thomas – A Glocal Economist” on 11th February 2016. The programme was inaugurated by the Manager of the College, Mar Jacob Muricken, and Auxiliary Bishop of Palai. Dr. Murali Vallabhavan was the chief resource person.

Dr. P.J. Thomas Centre for Social Science Research organized a lecture on “Economic history and the Polity in Medieval Kerala”, delivered by Rev. Dr. Pius Malekkandathil (Professor, Delhi University) on14 December 2016.

One day seminar on “Demonetisation 2016: Dynamics & Ramifications” was organized on 22nd February 2017. Dr .P.C. Cyriac (Former Additional Chief Secretary, Tamil Nadu) was the chief Guest.

One day seminar on “GST and Centre – State Relations in India” was organized in association with Dr. P.J. Thomas Centre for Social Sciences Research. The function formally inaugurated by Sri. Aneish P Rajan IRS, Joint commissioner, GST Central Taxes and Customs, Trivandrum on 12th February 2018.

To mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, One day seminar on “Relevance of Gandhian Economics in the Era of Globalisation” was organized in association with Dr. P.J. Thomas Centre for Social Sciences Research. The function formally inaugurated by Dr. M.S. John, professor, & Co-coordinator of the Centre for Gandhian Studies, Central University of Kerala, Kasargod.

WATCH LIVE BUDGET

A WATCH LIVE UNION BUDGET – 2017-18 was organized by the Department in the Auditorium on 01/02/2017.

A Watch Live Union Budget 2018-19 was organised on 1st February 2019.

INVITED TALKS

Lecture series – “Goods and Service Tax 2016” was organised on 7th September 2016. Sri. T.C. Mathew (senior Associate Editor, Deepika Daily) was the guest of honour.

Lecture on “Demonetisation: Intentions and implications” was delivered by Prof. Alan Zacharia on 10th October 2016.

GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

The Golden Jubilee Celebrations of PG Department of Economics was inaugurated by Sri. K. P. Fabian, IFS, Former Indian Ambassador and delivered a lecture on “India’s Foreign Policy” on October 30th 2017.

A discussion on Demonetization after one year was conducted by the Department on 10th November 2017. Sri. Ajith John, III BA Economics, presents a Paper on it.

In association with Dr. P.J. Thomas Centre for Social Sciences Research, An Inter -departmental paper presentations on “GST and Centre- State Relations in India” was organized on 12th February 2018. The session was chaired by Dr. Stany Thomas, Department of Political Science.

A talk on GST and its impact on Common Man was organized on 21st February 2018. Sri. Jose C Mathew (Tax Consultant) was the resource person.

CAREER ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

A career orientation programme was organized on 27th June 2016. Prof. Tomy Cherian inaugurated the programme and led the class.

A Skill Enhancement Programme was organised for I DC students of Economics on 22nd September 2016. Sri. Jose K.C. (Certified Language Trainer) was the resource person. This programme is intended to enhance the communication skills of the students in English.

A career guidance programme was organized for the III BA students of the department. The class was led by Synergy team.

A training class on socio-economic survey was arranged for II & III BA students of the department on 7th January 2019. The faculty members of the department handled the sessions.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY

A socio-economic survey was conducted by the department at Pazhukkakanam tribal hamlet in Moonnilavu Panchayat on 3rd September 2015.

ST. THOMAS PURA PROJECT- VILLAGE LIBRARY AT PAZHUKAKANAM. IT WAS ESTABLISHED ON 16-12-2015

The function of releasing socio – economic survey report was conducted on 23rd March 2017. Dr. Sunny Joseph, principal of the college released the report. The survey was undertaken by the department in Pazhukkakanam tribal hamlet in Moonnilavu Panchayat on 3rd September 2015.

A visit to Shalom DCMR Special School, Puliyannoor by all faculties and students was organized on 15th July 2016.

The Department has done a socio-economic survey in association with UBA survey in the Elakkadu village, in Kottayam district in January 2019
