Department Of Statistics
Established in 1953, the department initially functioned under the Department of Mathematics.
Gaining independence in 1970, it embarked on its journey as a separate entity. The department initiated its postgraduate program in 1959. Professor K. Ramakrishna Pillai, Professor V.K. Ignatius, and Dr. A.M. Mathai played a pivotal role in the department’s foundation. Renowned faculty members like Professor K.G. Panicker, Professor Thomas Mathew, Dr. Yageen Thomas, and Professor V.N. Sukumaran have also contributed significantly. The department’s research efforts were acknowledged in 1997 with its recognition as a research center. Distinguished alumni like Dr. N. Unnikrishnan Nair, Dr. Bovas Abraham, Dr. C.P. Kartha, and Dr. N.J. Kurian have brought immense honor through their achievements. Adding to its legacy are alumni like Dr. K.K. Jose, Sri T.K. Jose IAS and Smt. Girija ISS who have excelled in their respective fields.
The department actively engages in teaching, research, training, and consultancy services. It has hosted numerous international conferences and workshops, fostering academic exchange. Supported by the Department of Science and Technology – Fund for Improvement of Science & Technology (DST-FIST), the department thrives in its endeavors. A significant milestone was the introduction of the MSc Biostatistics program under the UGC Innovative Programme. This program focuses on emerging interdisciplinary areas, combining teaching and research. The department’s rich history and continuous pursuit of excellence have positioned it as a leader in its field. Through its dedicated faculty, alumni, and programs, the department shapes future generations in its area of expertise.
