Department of Sanskrit
The college introduced a Postgraduate course in Hindi in 1957, with Sanskrit as a specialized paper. Professor D. Joseph, a distinguished scholar, was the first Sanskrit instructor. When the Bachelor’s program in Malayalam was started in 1959, Sanskrit was integrated as a subsidiary course. Professors Somavarmaraja and R. S. Pothuval also taught Sanskrit during this period. Later, Professor C. J. Sebastian continued to teach Sanskrit until 1987, at which point Professor C. T. Francis took over and became the first permanent faculty member in Sanskrit. In 1989, the Sanskrit program was officially designated as a separate department by the University. Currently, the department offers complementary courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in Malayalam. Additionally, under the FYUGP framework, it provides AEC courses for Humanities and DSC Minor Courses.
