Department Of Economics

The Department of Economics was started in the year 1953 with under graduate course. The PG programme was started in the year 1967. At present, our department is the most sought-after place for PG programme in the MG University and probably in Kerala State, as reflected by student preferences in the PG admission process. The number of students securing ranks and NET is on the increase every year, and many former students are occupying faculty positions across colleges in Kerala. The present faculty of the Department is committed to continuing the great legacy that was established by illuminories like, Prof.V.J.Mathai, Prof.A.O.Joseph, Prof.N.J. Devasia and Prof.E.S. Joseph. Our distinguished alumni, including Mr. Augustine Peter IES, (former Member, Competition Commission of India), Dr. K.S. James, former Director of International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS), Mr.Ajith John KAS (Kerala Administrative Service) and many others occupying key positions in banking, corporate companies, and academic institutions, are the ones who are inspiring us to be instruments in the formation of many other such gems. The Department regularly conducts socio-economic surveys in and around our locality to capture the living conditions of rural households. “Ecofiesta”, an intercollegiate fest which is organized every year, has by now been established itself as one of the major events among intercollegiate fests across the state. The department of Economics is in the process of becoming a research department, and our college attaining autonomous status, the introduction of four-year UG programme, etc. are all generating intriguing impetus for us to strive towards greater heights.
