Established in 1953, the Department of Botany boasts a proud history of nurturing numerous Degree and Post Graduate batches to excellence. Among the trailblazers of this esteemed department are Prof. P.M. Chacko, Dr. C.V. Krishna Iyengar, K.V. Varghese, N.J. Abraham, P.J. Joseph Paly, T.M. Thomas Thelly, Mathew M. Sebastian, Sr. V.C. Annakkutty, Fr. James Vellankal, M.C. Mani, K.P. Sebastian, T.U. Thomas, Rev. Dr. M.M. Mathew, Dr. Prince George, Dr. Joshy V. Cherian, Dr. P.O. Augusthy, Dr. Johns Augustine and Prof. Jomy Augustine. Distinguished alumni such as K.S. Sebastian, K.C. Sebastian, M.N. Gopinath, Noyal Thomas IFS, Dr. Jose C. Periyapuram, Fr. The department achieved the status of a research department in 2002, marking a significant milestone, and has since conferred 11 doctoral degrees. Its scholarly contributions resonate globally, evidenced by the publication of over 200 research articles in prestigious international journals. Furthermore, the faculty members of the department have authored several remarkable books, enriching the academic landscape.
Noteworthy is the department’s pivotal role in botanical discovery, having identified and described over 25 plant species previously unknown to science. It stands as a beacon of innovation and exploration in the field of botany. Additionally, the department, along with its associated Plant Conservatory, houses more than 90 endangered species.
