Department Of Commerce ( Self Financing )

The Department of Commerce (Self-financing) was established in 2013, introducing an Undergraduate Programme in Commerce (B. Com) with computer applications as an elective course. Dr. K. V. Thomas, a former Associate Professor at the Department of Commerce, St. Thomas College Palai, served as the department’s coordinator at its inception. Initially, the program had a sanctioned strength of 40 students, which was later augmented to accommodate 50 students. The department’s vision is to become a center of excellence in business studies while upholding moral and ethical values. Its mission revolves around empowering learners with knowledge and awareness of current developments in commerce and industry, fostering entrepreneurial spirit, and nurturing organizational skills among students. Dr. Joy Jacob T., a former Principal at Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad, and Dr. P. D. George, a former Associate Professor at the Department of Hindi, St. Thomas College Palai, served as coordinators of the department from 2017-2020 and 2020-2023, respectively. In addition to the B. Com program, the department also offers an add-on program in ‘Business Entrepreneurship,’ aiming to equip students with practical skills and knowledge in starting and managing businesses effectively. 

Throughout its existence, the department has been committed to providing quality education in commerce, blending theoretical learning with practical applications to prepare students for the dynamic business world. With a dedicated faculty and a focus on holistic development, the Department of Commerce (Self-financing) continues to strive towards its vision of excellence in business education. It plays a vital role in shaping future business leaders and entrepreneurs, contributing to the growth and development of the economy.
